Bucyrus: Making the Earth Move for 125 Years
|
| |
Author: Keith Haddock
Bucyrus International Inc., formerly Bucyrus-Erie Company, celebrates 125 years of building heavy excavating machinery, including the largest earthmovers ever to roam the planet. Founded in 1880 by Daniel P. Eells and a group of business associates, the company built a diverse range of machines and grew to become the leading supplier of walking draglines, shovels, and drills to the surface mining industry.
With its acquired companies, such as Marion Power Shovel and Ransomes & Rapier, Bucyrus built the entire roster of giant stripping shovels in the western world, and the record-breaking "Big Muskie" walking dragline. Over 90 percent of the giant walking draglines working today have been built by the Bucyrus companies.
About the Author Keith Haddock, P.Eng., has become an expert authority on earthmoving equipment after a career spanning 35 years in the earthmoving and surface mining industries. In 1985, he co-founded the Historical Construction Equipment Association based in Bowling Green, Ohio, where for seven years he edited their house magazine "Equipment Echoes". He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Alberta, Canada.
Since retiring from Luscar in 1998 Keith has been a full-time author and freelance writer on heavy equipment. He is also known for his TV appearances on the History, Discovery and Learning Channels.
