The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was the most produced US aircraft, with 18,188 aircraft of all variants built between 1939 and 1945. These included the C-87 transport, C-109 fuel transport, and the Navys PB4Y Liberator/Privateer patrol bomber. The B-24s basic design remained constant, although there were many improvements in performance, armament, and other systems. Although overshadowed in the popular imagination by the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 served in all US theaters during the conflict. Liberators assigned to the 9th and 15th Air Forces operated over the Mediterranean and southern Europe, while those of the 8th Air Force flew over northern Europe. B-24s were dominant in the Pacific theater, flying with the 6th, 11th, 14th, 5th, 13th, and 7th Air Forces. Although more difficult to fly than the B-17, the B-24 boasted superior speed, range, and bomb load. B-24 expert Bill Holders book examines the Liberators service history during World War Two.
