Barris Kustom Techniques of the 50's Lights, Skirts, Engines and Interiors

Author: George Barris

Volume Three starts with a short history of customizing as told by someone who was definitely there – George Barris. The rest of the book is made up of car features photographed by George in the 1950s, interspersed with how-to segments photographed in the Barris' shop. Perhaps the best part of Volume Three is the short side bars or interviews with men who worked in the Barris shop back in the day. Junior Conway tells the story of going to the Barris shop for the first time and asking Sam to weld up some fender skirts, which George's brother Sam did for the astronomical fee of two dollars. Though Volume Three serves up plenty of chopped Mercurys, it also offers later cars than Volumes One and Two, including some futuristic cars like the Golden Sahara. In most cases the book provides shop photos of the car during construction and finished, features photos as well. Part how-to manual, part nostalgia and part automotive history lesson, Barris Kustom Techniques Volume Three gives the reader an inside look at custom cars from the 1950s.
